GATE Economics is open to students from arts, commerce, science and engineering backgrounds. You do not need an engineering degree, and the examination does not require every applicant to hold a degree in Economics.
For 2027, choose the Humanities and Social Sciences paper, XH, with Economics, XH1, as your optional section. Older papers and admission notices use XH-C1 for Economics. The section codes changed in 2027. Official GATE brochure

Can you apply before graduating?
Under the GATE 2027 eligibility rules, you can appear if you are in the third year or a higher year of an eligible undergraduate degree, or have already graduated. Your degree must meet the recognition requirements in the official eligibility table.
| Your position | What this means for GATE |
|---|---|
| Third year of a three-year BA, BSc or BCom | You can appear, subject to the official degree-recognition conditions |
| Third or fourth year of a four-year undergraduate degree | You can appear; you need not wait until the final year |
| Completed an eligible undergraduate degree | You can appear, including after a gap or while working |
| First or second year of a bachelor's degree | The general third-year rule has not yet been met |
If you are studying outside India, check the overseas-degree requirements on the eligibility page.
Is there an age limit or minimum graduation percentage?
There is no age limit for GATE 2027. The examination eligibility rules do not impose one common graduation-percentage threshold for everyone. Universities may set their own marks, degree and subject requirements for admission. GATE 2027 brochure
If you are taking GATE during the third year of a four-year degree, you may be eligible to write the exam before you are eligible to join a postgraduate course. You still need to finish the qualifying degree by that programme's deadline.
Selecting Economics in the application form
Choose Economics when filling the application. For XH, the optional section is selected at application time, and cannot be changed during the examination.
Your paper will contain General Aptitude, Reasoning and Comprehension, and Economics. GA and reasoning together carry 40 of the paper's 100 marks. See the paper breakdown.
What can you use the score for?
A GATE score is valid for three years from the result announcement. Admission depends on the programme accepting your paper and score year, as well as your degree.
Options include Economics and public-policy master's courses, Economics PhDs at IITs, and doctoral programmes at several IIMs. Our admissions guide lists the courses, degree requirements and official application information. Some programmes accept only scores from the last two years.
