With GATE Economics, you can apply for selected master's courses in Economics and public policy, as well as PhD programmes at IITs, IIMs and other institutions. Your options depend on your degree, marks and GATE score.
Here are selected options at IITs, IIMs, IISc and Madras School of Economics, grouped by what you want to study next. Each entry links to the institute's own admission information. Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission or a scholarship; some programmes also have a written test or interview.
The admission years are shown beside the courses. Where a 2027 notice is not yet available, the details are from 2026.

Master's courses in Economics and public policy
If you want to continue studying Economics, start with the Economics degrees below. Public-policy and development courses may suit you if you are more interested in government policy, social programmes and development issues.
| Institute and course | GATE admission route | Degree requirement or other important detail |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Madras — MA Economics | Economics XH-C1; 2026 intake | Undergraduate degrees from all disciplines accepted. 25 seats. 2026 brochure |
| IIT Madras — MA Development Studies | Economics is one of the accepted XH sections; 2026 intake | 5 seats allocated to Economics applicants within the programme. 2026 brochure |
| IIT Madras — MA Public Policy | Accepts the listed XH sections, including Economics; 2026 intake | 25 seats shared across the eligible XH sections. 2026 brochure |
| IIT Bombay — Master of Public Policy (MPP) | All GATE papers accepted for the TA category; 2026–27 | Eligible degrees include a four-year bachelor's degree or a master's degree. A three-year BA alone is not enough. Shortlisted applicants take a written test and interview. Degree and admission rules, accepted GATE papers and scores |
| IIT Indore — MS by Research in HSS, Economics discipline | Valid GATE score in HSS; Economics advertised for 2026 | Four-year bachelor's degree, master's degree or five-year integrated degree, with first division. Eligibility, Economics admission notice |
| IIT Tirupati — Master of Public Policy (MPP) | A separate GATE track for the 2026–28 batch | The course includes policy analysis, data science and a dissertation. A non-GATE admission track is also available. 2026 notice |
For IIT Bombay's MPP, minimum degree marks differ by qualification and category. For example, the 2026–27 brochure requires 55% in an MA, reduced to 50% for SC, ST and PwD applicants. It sets different thresholds for several science and technical degrees.
IIT Madras's MA seats in the 2026 brochure are non-HTTA: they do not carry the Half-Time Teaching Assistantship offered with eligible MTech seats. If funding matters to your decision, compare the fees and assistance for the particular course.
What about IIT Kanpur's MSc Economics?
IIT Kanpur uses JAM for MSc Economics from 2026–27 onward. Its programme page lists admission through the Economics and Mathematical Statistics papers. GATE is an option for its Economics PhD, covered below. IIT Kanpur MSc admissions
Other master's courses you could consider
If you are interested in a broader social-science course, IIT Delhi's MA in Culture, Society and Thought accepted every XH subject in 2026. Ten of its 25 seats were through GATE; shortlisted GATE applicants went directly to the interview. IIT Delhi admission notice
IIT Gandhinagar's MA in Society and Culture announced admission through GATE from 2026. Its admission page asks for a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 55% marks, subject to category rules. The page does not list the accepted GATE sections, so confirm that Economics is accepted before applying. IIT Gandhinagar MA admissions
If you have an engineering degree and want to study management, IISc's Master of Management is another option. The 2026 programme accepted GATE, but required a BE or BTech with first class. It specialises in Business Analytics; it is not a master's degree in Economics. IISc M.Mgt admissions
Economics PhDs at IITs
If you have already completed a master's and want to do research, the following departments accept GATE as one of their qualifying examinations. Some also admit applicants with specified four-year degrees. The degree requirements and admission categories differ, so the links below go to the relevant department or brochure.
| Institute | Programme and admission information | How GATE is used |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Kanpur | PhD in Economic Sciences; current postgraduate admission rules | The accepted-paper list includes Economics XH-C1. A relevant master's or an eligible four-year science/engineering degree is required. Eligibility, accepted papers |
| IIT Delhi | PhD in Economics; department admission rules | GATE is an accepted qualifying examination. The department lists master's and specified technical-degree routes. Economics PhD admissions |
| IIT Bombay | PhD in Economics; department admission rules | GATE is accepted for consideration under the Teaching Assistantship (TA) category. The MA Economics route requires 55%, or 50% for SC/ST applicants; other qualifying degrees have separate rules. Eligibility and TA requirements |
| IIT Madras | PhD in HSS, including Economics; January 2027 | The relevant master's-degree route accepts GATE. The HSS requirement is 55% aggregate or 6.0 CGPA on a ten-point scale. January 2027 brochure, pages 13 and 22 |
| IIT Kharagpur | PhD in HSS, including Economics; rolling admissions, 2026–27 | GATE is accepted under the regular Institute Assistantship category. Department shortlisting and selection still apply. Admission brochure, sections 3.2–3.3 |
| IIT Roorkee | PhD in HSS, including Economics; department admission rules | The department considers GATE and NET-JRF qualified applicants for interviews. Department admissions |
| IIT Guwahati | PhD in HSS, including Economics; department admission rules | GATE is one of the qualifications for the regular full-time category with institute financial assistance. PhD programme and admission categories |
| IIT Hyderabad | PhD in Liberal Arts, Economics; January 2027 | GATE is accepted for the MoE fellowship category. This round's MoE seats are restricted to SC, ST and EWS applicants. Economics applications are invited in Macroeconomics. January 2027 notice |
IIT Indore's PhD rules need a closer check if you have an MA. Its HSS advertisement mentions GATE, but the detailed degree-wise rules distinguish science/engineering master's, MPhil and HSS master's applicants. Do not assume that an MA plus GATE meets every category's requirements. Ask the department about your qualification before paying the application fee. IIT Indore HSS PhD rules
Economics doctoral programmes at IIMs
Several IIMs offer Economics research within their doctoral programmes in Management. These are doctoral programmes, not MBA admissions through GATE.
| Institute | Economics or policy specialisation | GATE acceptance and admission year |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | Economics; Public Systems is another option for policy research | GATE is accepted for both specialisations in the 2026–27 brochure. Admission brochure, selection table |
| IIM Calcutta | Economics | The 2027 application rules explicitly accept GATE Economics. The test score must be no more than two years old on the application deadline. Application rules |
| IIM Lucknow | Economics and Business Environment | GATE is accepted in the 2026 doctoral advertisement, with a two-year test-score window. 2026 advertisement |
| IIM Kozhikode | Economics | GATE is an accepted test for the full-time doctoral programme in 2026–27. Admission policy |
| IIM Shillong | Economics and Public Policy | The 2027 rules accept a valid GATE score in the relevant specialisation. Admission rules, specialisations |
| IIM Ranchi | Economics and Public Policy | The 2026 rules accept GATE in the relevant area, with scores from the last two years. Shortlisted applicants attend a seminar presentation and interview. PhD admissions |
You still need to meet the institute's degree and marks requirements. For example, IIM Kozhikode's 2026–27 policy requires 60% in a master's degree or 75% in a four-year bachelor's degree, with the listed category relaxations.
GATE acceptance can differ between specialisations at the same IIM. The 2026 Economics lists at IIM Indore and IIM Tiruchirappalli do not include GATE, although other areas accept it. At IIM Calcutta, GATE Economics is accepted for Economics; the Public Policy and Management area lists GATE Architecture and Planning instead.
Other institutions for Economics research
| Institution | Programme | GATE route and admission year |
|---|---|---|
| Madras School of Economics | PhD in Economics | The December 2026–January 2027 notice accepts a valid GATE score among its qualifying tests. A master's in Economics and an interview are required. PhD admissions |
| IISc Bengaluru | PhD in Management Studies | The 2026 rules accept applicants with a master's in Economics, among other degrees. Research areas include Development Economics, Econometrics and Public Policy. GATE XH appears in the department's shortlisting table. Degree and research details, 2026 shortlisting scores |
Applications, score validity and COAP
Apply separately to each institute. Your GATE application does not register you for these courses.
For IIT Madras's MA admissions in 2026, you also needed COAP registration to view and accept GATE-based offers. COAP is the portal used to respond to those offers; you must still submit the institute's application. Follow the COAP requirement only where the programme's notice asks for it. IIT Madras admission brochure, section 2.8
A GATE score is valid for three years from the result announcement, but an institute can ask for a more recent score. IIM Calcutta's two-year rule above is one example. GATE score validity
For each course you shortlist, note the application deadline, accepted score years, interview date and last date to accept an offer. Prepare your scorecard, marksheets, degree or provisional certificate, and applicable category certificates. If you are still in your final year, check when proof of graduation is due.
Choosing a course and preparing for interviews
If you want stronger training in economic theory and econometrics, compare the compulsory courses in the Economics programmes. If you want to work on policy, look at the methods courses, fieldwork and dissertation in the policy programmes. These differences matter more than the institute name alone.
For a PhD, read about the faculty working in your area. You should be able to explain what you would like to study and how it connects to your coursework or previous project.
Where a research proposal is requested, start with a specific question. For example, instead of proposing to study “education in India”, you could ask how a scholarship affects college enrolment in a particular state. Briefly explain what earlier research has found, what you want to examine and which data you might use. Follow the department's word limit and format.
For fees, fellowships and placements, use information for the particular programme and admission batch. A scholarship available to PhD students may not be available to MA students, and an institute-wide placement figure will not tell you how an Economics batch did.
