You do not need an Economics degree to appear for JAM Economics. Graduates from other subjects can also take the exam. The important distinction is between being eligible to write JAM and meeting the requirements of the MSc programme you want to join.

Who can appear for JAM 2027?
You can appear if you have completed an undergraduate degree, or will take your final qualifying examination in 2027. There is no age limit. The examination is open to Indian and foreign nationals, subject to the admission rules that apply to them. See the JAM 2027 information brochure, sections 2.1 and 2.4.
If you are in your final year, you must complete the degree requirements before the admitting institute's admission date. Submit proof within the deadline that institute gives you. Contact the institute if your university’s results may arrive after that deadline.
Which degrees do the Economics programmes accept?
The following requirements are listed against the Economics paper, EN, in Annexure II of the 2027 brochure.
| MSc Economics programme | Degree requirement listed for admission through EN |
|---|---|
| IIT Delhi | BA, BSc, BCom, BStat, BMath, BTech, BE or an equivalent degree, with at least three years of education after Class 12 |
| IIT Kanpur | A bachelor's degree of at least three years after Class 12 |
| IIT Roorkee | BSc Economics, BA Economics, BSc Statistics or BCA; BSc, BA or BCom with Mathematics as a subject; no subject restriction for engineering degrees |
For example, a BCom graduate may meet Delhi's and Kanpur's listed degree requirements. For Roorkee, Mathematics in the degree matters. Do not assume that Class 12 Mathematics meets a requirement written under bachelor's degree subjects.
Is there a minimum percentage?
The JAM examination eligibility rule does not set one common graduation percentage for every applicant. Institute admission conditions must still be checked separately.
For example, IIT Delhi's MSc Economics page specifies 55% or a 5.5 CGPA for General, OBC and EWS applicants, and 50% or a 5.0 CGPA for SC, ST and PwD applicants. Use Delhi's current admission notice when applying; this is not a percentage rule for taking JAM itself.
Keep your semester marksheets ready. If your transcript uses credits or an unusual subject title, the admissions office may need the course syllabus to decide whether it meets the requirement.
Preparing without an Economics degree
Start with the Economics syllabus and paper pattern. You will need calculus, optimisation, probability and statistics along with economic theory.
If Economics is new to you, begin with functions, differentiation and basic microeconomics. Our 24-week plan builds these foundations before moving to more demanding applications. If you have already studied the subjects, the shorter revision plans may suit you better.
Who to contact about eligibility
For questions about the examination application, use the JAM 2027 contact page: jam@iitkgp.ac.in, or +91 3222 282091 / 282095.
For a programme's degree or subject requirement, write to that institute's admissions office. Include your degree name, university, duration and relevant subjects. For example: “Does my BCom with Mathematics in semesters 1 and 2 meet the MSc Economics requirement?”
